Wow, wow, whoaman!

This week I got to speak to the “woman”. This past week I missed a couple of calls from the same number on the same day. The call ID came with no details whatsoever and that usually…

Friends, here’s a journey to the Barre-a-thon I thought I would share from when I first joined the blogging team with with anti human trafficking organization, The Exodus Road. You can find the original post on my ithinkagain.com blog here.

A few years ago, right before I launched Tribal Marks (Passion Barre’s parent brand), I started to hear a lot about this “human trafficking thing”, but like with many others, the concept just wasn’t hitting home… until I actually listened. I was listening to Lisa Bevere with Pearl Alliance and she told the story of an undercover visit to a brothel. She spoke of a lady who was trapped in sex slavery and forced labor. We’ll call the lady “Pearl.” Pearl was accustomed to servicing about 40 clients a day while her children waited under the bed. She had concluded that there was no hope for her, but maybe someone could smuggle away her children… if she could just get them into the right hands, that is. She ran after them and almost blew their cover as she called out “Please, take my children.”

I didn’t know when a wail came from within me as I listened. Not just tears or sadness, but a long, painful WAIL! Oddly enough, Lisa had just said this a few weeks before in another one of her podcasts: “It’s not until you wail on behalf of another. It’s not until the plight of another touches you to the core… then will you do something about it.”

I had considered myself an orphan and abuse victim advocate, yet I had never imagined an industry where perpetrators maximized the very worst of this combination. Preying on orphans, “harvesting” babies, and putting children as young as 7 years into sex slavery and pornography while clients from suits to beach bums took advantage of them.

How did women like Pearl get into this bondage? Was she lured with a great “job” offer that would help her take care of her family? Was she sold off by parents or guardians who couldn’t afford basic neccessities? Was she born into it? Or was she simply kidnapped and never heard from again, becoming another soul lost in the sea of about 27 million in captivity.

You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know. ― William Wilberforce

Tribal Marks launched, with the Please TAKE My Children campaign, and the brand I were bound to the cause of Freedom. “Please TAKE My Children”, is the cry of a dead or helpless parent, but ultimately, the heart of God– asking us to steward His creation-His children, and take up their cause as though they were ours, just as He did for us.

Our campaigns have allowed us to raise funds in a creative manner with evenings of art, fashion, food, dance, poetry, friends… and then we channel the funds through allies on the field as we build relationships.

Right before opening up the studio in the Rancho Cucamonga location, I was introduced to The Exodus Road team and fell in love with the coalition’s strategy of intervention; and had the privilege of spending a week with them in South East Asia, blogging about their incredible work. This was life-changing. The Exodus Road is a coalition of covert investigators and organizations working together to fight human trafficking through interventions. They gather legal evidence, support raids and prosecutions, and support aftercare facilities in our network. Read the rest at ithinkagain.com

Freedom has often come, and can only come, as a result of the free becoming distressed by the captivity of the enslaved.

As a coalition also with Pearl Alliance they enable individuals to be an important part of the work of rescue and restoration. A part of raising awareness about human trafficking is being aware not only of the issue, but becoming a part of the solution. Rescue is happening, and it’s happening in the hands of everyday heroes like you and me.

I have since met with more incredible teams since Pearl Alliance and Exodus Road; some of whom we consider featured partners at Passion Barre. Most also have their projects featured under Pearl Alliance, which is fantastic, as we thrive on the principles of partnership and unity.

This season and Human Trafficking Awareness month, we dedicate a lot of time, resources and energy to rescue and freedom, culminating in our Barre-a-thon for Freedom – a series of deliriously liberating Passion Barre classes in one day, free to the community, at a suggested donation. Proceeds from our Barre-a-thon and overall Fight for Freedom 24/7 Giving Challenge go directly to empower our partners’ work in rescuing women and children from slavery.

If you can join us for a Barre class, we’d love to have you. If not, you can still be a part of it. We encourage you to consider giving what you can towards our team goal of funding a raid (to seek, rescue and restore victims; and convict these criminals) this season.

History

Human Trafficking/Modern Day Slavery is an issue that you might have started to hear about. But more than just a buzz, the shocking reality is that there are estimated to be 27 million in the world who have been forced into labor and sex. This is an estimated 32 billion dollar industry, and the average price of acquiring a slave is $90!

We are passionate about Freedom and Inspiration at Passion Barre and Karingah; and we believe that:

Freedom has often come, and can only come, as a result of the free becoming distressed by the captivity of the enslaved.

Individual freedom is still being threatened, and we want to raise louder voices this month with other abolitionists worldwide.

We’re focusing our giving efforts on projects by A21 Campaign and The Exodus Road through our partner, Pearl Alliance.

Also, if you’ve never heard of Human Trafficking; or you have heard, but didn’t think it was possible to make a difference; please reflect on this short clip on top 10 human trafficking facts and how you can help end slavery in twenty five years!

I had this great conversation with a guest ambassador (client) after Passion Barre class a couple of Mondays ago. We are thankful for the free world (as we insist on calling it that). People should be free to do whatever they want… But is it freedom if it enslaves another? It might be a touchy subject, speaking on social accountability. But during the Barre-a-thon for human trafficking awareness month, we did so because we have a community that cares enough to be uncomfortable.

We spoke of being aware of our surroundings with all there is to notice if people actually paid attention and concern. We even spoke on parenting both ours and other’s children, and bringing back the “it takes a village” mentality. With runaway youth being at a high risk of being trafficked in the United States, we encouraged families to allow their youth to be vulnerable with them so they didn’t have to be vulnerable outside. We talked about getting in their business and social media life, and not being afraid of not being “their friend” temporarily. I know, hard balance to keep, but possible, with love. And how about offering accountability to those who are old enough to do whatever they want? Because they account for much of the market that victimizes the trafficked.

During my interview with one of the investigators with the Exodus Road in SE Asia, the investigator shared that a primary way to prevent trafficking involved reweaving the moral fiber of the society. I nodded emphatically! You see, during the eighteenth century when English abolitionist William Wilberforce sought to abolish slavery, he had to start with reform – by restoring public manners and by influencing people to see how wrong and inhumane slavery was. Apparently it had been so engrained in society, people weren’t moved about it. As we say, freedom has often come, and can only come, as a result of the free becoming distressed by the captivity of the enslaved- and doing something about it. From there, they were then able to combat slavery. But the common form of slavery then was obvious. Today it’s a little hidden because it’s so much in our faces.

There is a freedom that enslaves. But then it’s not freedom at all. It’s licentiousness. It’s the type that says “I’m old enough to do what I want and what I feel; I’m a responsible adult; we’re consenting adults; no one would ever know; I shouldn’t have to answer to anyone; it’s harmless; it’s necessary; anyone who opposes me is just a religious freak; and why should I feel bad about this?” Or it’s the type that says “It’s not my business; I don’t want to seem judgmental.” It’s the type that engages or does not discourage cheap labor, pornography, prostitution, terrorism and so on – not realizing how often these behaviors are serviced by forced victims. The type is a person, and a behavior. They are the market, they create the industry. The $32 Billion industry. After all, you cannot sell what people won’t buy.

The purpose of moral standards isn’t to prove we’re better than anyone. It’s to protect one’s self and others, whether one know how far it reaches or not. That’s why it’s called a standard.

Which made me ponder… What would you give for your freedom, or another’s? We had just opened the studio in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and Rebecca, new to our barre classes at the time was lit up by the fit-for-free concept of stimulating freedom and rescue.

The freedom space, as I like to call the studio, was barely two and a half weeks old. We hit the ground running as I returned from a trip with the Exodus Road to get the place open. We were pleasantly surprised that our social enterprise model, “Fit-for-Free” was touching the hearts of clients as they walked through the doors and automatically become ambassadors in the fight for freedom. Their faces lit up as we told them about the trip to SE Asia with The Exodus Road; and the encouraging news that came to us while we were there- that a ring had been taken down, and more children had been rescued by members of the coalition. Again, rescue is happening.

Although about 27 million are estimated to be in slavery worldwide, rescue is happening, and there are unseen warriors on the field actively working to ensure the freedom of more! John, a co-blogger, who blogs at johnflurry.com and I had the privilege of meeting the undercover investigators who could care less about the glory – because they care so much more about the enslaved. They have given up their seen identity, recognition, comfort and safety… those things which are usually important to human existence.

So what exactly was it that Rebecca said? She came to me after a Barre class expressing what she does to get through some of the routines as the intensity increases and her body feels it can’t take it anymore. We usually tell our students to retain control of the core and breathe deeply through the most intense rounds, but Rebecca said she would picture a child trapped in slavery, awaiting rescue, and then decide that this was nothing in comparison to what they have had to endure… and so she would continue. Mmm.

Our clients know that every time they show up for Barre or Karingah! classes to get fit, they are helping someone get free- because we match their attendance with funds to send to our chosen partners – and that’s plenty of motivation. But Rebecca took it to the level that I hope for most – carrying them in our hearts, in our consciousness, in our prayers and in our giving… or giving up of something.

During our expedition to SE Asia, I saw things my imagination had not previously fathomed. I shared a bit of that experience in a previous post on the Think Again Blog“What are You Doing Here, Lord?”

Don’t get me wrong, my first impression as we landed was the breathtaking beauty of the land, temple architecture; with the serene, respectful disposition of the people; and of course, the merchandise! But then there was the dark contrast on the other side in the brothels that just didn’t add up. It didn’t add up that these young girls weren’t covered or protected anywhere. Exploited by those who held them in captivity as they blended in with the widely available prostitution activities. Exploited by sex tourists and locals who enjoy these services. Exploited by their own people who might have given them up sometimes knowingly to put the next meal on the table. And what about brotherly solidarity? That went out the window as even cab drivers presumptuously offered us portfolios of girls available for sex… you never knew where you would turn and run into the dark offer of poverty– and that was my clue. Poverty. Poverty doesn’t add up. It manifests itself beyond just the lack of money and grips the soul to wickedness, betraying its very self and others for the sake of survival. Poverty in this region offered a solution that pushed many to give up their freedom and conscience, or have it taken away forcefully.

So how can we be a part of the solution? One investigator emphasized the need for support in the target areas of counter-trafficking that need strengthening– Intervention for instance, because if crime is not confronted, it continues unrestrained. “We must equip and prevent, and we also must care and restore, but we must be bold to rescue the ones currently in the jaws of bondage.” Making the industry less lucrative and difficult to get into is a highly preventative solution.

Another investigator touched on a reality that our western world may find harder to swallow because of our increase in the “personal relativity” of moral standards: “Restore/bring change to the moral fiber of the nation” is what he said. “We must confront immorality for what it is and bring reformation to the souls of people by working in partnership with the church out there”. To take it a step further, it’s time to start getting in each other’s business again as a society. It’s not okay that “tourists,” travel overseas because of the widely available unrestrained sex market. Or that the U.S. for example is the top destination for the smuggled and trafficked victims. One person’s pleasure “feeds” knowingly or unknowingly into one another’s captivity or a child’s “stardom” into pornography!

Many reading this post may have never experienced poverty at this level but maybe battled with the mentality. But what would you give up to survive? Your possessions? Time? Dignity? Your kids? It may be hard to say if you’ve never walked in those shoes, and for that I’m thankful that you haven’t had to. So because of that, the more relevant question should again be “what would you give?”

What would you give for your own freedom? Would you give it for another’s?

There are opportunities around you to give… get involved somehow.

What a DAY! Our hearts are were so warmed with the generous support of our Passion Barre and Karingah tribe as they walked with us last Saturday at the Terra Vista Farmer’s market to raise awareness about human trafficking.

A pivotal moment for us was when we witnessed the young, extremely shy, son of one of our ladies transform into a bold abolitionist right before our eyes. His mother had shared the issue of human trafficking with him along with it’s unfortunate exploitation of women and children. He showed up, asked to pick up the biggest sign and went on his walk to stand in the gap for fellow children. His youth and passion made an impact on many because he returned rather quickly to pick up more cards to share.

When captives are silenced, we speak twice as loud…

It was such a profound moment for me as I thought “with the quiet and shy ones, sometimes all you need to do is give them something that matters to help them find their voice.” Give them something worth talking about… something worth leaving their comfort zone for. When our young advocate heard that too many kids have been silenced, he could no longer remain silent. He spoke twice as loud.

You see, my voice found me too. I’m not a quiet person, but I’ve experienced being silenced on the inside. Yes, it’s the loud ones who lose their voice. My destiny got shaped by the passion and call to freedom. Freedom helped me regain my voice and made it clearer… and louder.

Passion Barre tribe walk at Terra Vista Farmers MarketAs the afternoon went on, we had other outstanding opportunities to share facts and solutions with the community. Several learned new things and thanked us for being there; some committed to showing up at the Barre-a-thon this Saturday to help raise funds; plus, we were able to spotlight our partners’ great work.

All this, and yet we were faced with some ridiculous opposition! And I mean so ridiculous you couldn’t miss it. Some were uncomfortable just by us simply being there… but of course. Empty barrels that tried to make the most noise. But we had already been heard.

And while I won’t bother getting into the details, the opposition actually made it exciting. It was a reminder for me, and I’m glad I caught it.  There’s always resistance when you’re gaining ground and doing something that matters! People vary, and reasons for opposition are as many as there are people on earth, haha. So you can’t always predict where the resistance will come from. In fact, you would be surprised. But this is not the time to get sidetracked. Focus. And just like we say at the Barre: resistance is necessary to build muscle. Stumbling blocks are useful as stepping stones for you to CONTINUE on your way to the top. Find or regain your voice, and speak up for what matters.

See you at the Barre for the final run on Saturday, the 24th! Register here to guarantee your spot at the Barre-a-thon, those classes are filling up! (:  Those who can’t make it are encouraged to donate here
